Comics Corner
Moving In
Welcome back to Fan Art! Contrary to popular belief, the update is not late this week. It's quite on time actually. The column will, starting this week, be updated every friday. It will make it much easier for me. Fan Art seems to be growing a little bit every week, and I'm happy to finally post this new update introducing the Comics Corner. I've had this planned for a few weeks but some tinkering needed to be done. I hope you enjoy the comics and expect to see more in the following weeks. Anyway, I decided to put Rondo Of Swords aside and try Dragon Quest IV. I really like it. I'm at chapter 3 right now and it's being a lot of fun. Baldur's Gate is better and better as I play it so I'm happy with that. I have almost finished the main game. Under the spotlight this week shines At The Stable, another of Rebehm's computer generated 3D pieces. I must admit I did not recognize the piece as a Final Fantasy VI fan art at first, but it is certainly due to Rebehm's decision to dress Celes with new garments. Of particular interest here is the interaction between Celes and the chocobo. You might remember the yellow birds playing but a small role in this wonderful game. Here, Rebehm offers you a moment of tenderness between Celes and her mount. It even appears to have a name. Next, look at the textures, especialy Celes' clothes. They look soft and comfortable. I'd like to point out another detail. The wall behind the chocobo appears a little bit fainter and blurred than the wall in front of the animal. Unless I turned crazy, I can even see a blue tint in the back. These adjustments help create distance between the elements. Lucas Cersaine has submitted our first Odin Sphere fan art. The dynamic drawing features Oswald in a fighting stance. The drawing is quite impressive because drawing this kind of position can be puzzling and difficult. Here, everything seems to be in order. Although it is monochrome the picture is filled with subtle details such as texture, light reflection and deep shadows, creating a certain depth and giving the shapes a solid look. I also like how the character seems to be gazing at the viewer. Are you his enemy? Halloween comes early this year with this Kingdom Hearts fan art from Zocko. The picture is colorful and bright, which is rare for that kind of imagery. It does have a rather cartoony look though. What is Cloud doing with his left hand? That, I don't know, but he seems really friendly with Sora. The characters are looking in each other's eyes and share a special relationship. Although it'd be easy to tag it as love, I think a strong friendship or close brotherhood could be plausible, though knowing the characters' backgrounds eliminates the later. Nonetheless, this bond between the characters attracts the attention so much that it is a central element of the piece, maybe even more important than the halloween theme. Make sure to check the bright white moon and the colorful huge bag! Next picture stars Kirin the esper from Final Fantasy VI. This pretty useful summoned beast is portrayed in all its majesty in this detailed black and white piece by Aurian who went through a bit of research for the drawing. According to the artist's comments, the scenery behind the beast is made to reference Kirin's asian background, and Aurian did a nice job keeping it from taking too much place. What often happens with black and white pictures is that the character gets lost in its surroundings. The deep black spots are well spread through the drawing, mostly due to the unicorn's position which is classic for a horse-type character but still dynamic. Very good picture from Aurian. Only suggestion that comes to mind right now is that the image could have been cropped better to leave the weird line at the top out. Let's Play Geno by Boum is the last regular picture for the week. Its very flat aspect makes me think about Paper Mario, which is quite ironic when you consider the Paper Mario series could have been Super Mario RPG sequels. I like the texture on the clothes and the bright colors. The character design is simple but attractive, just what you'd come to expect from Boum. Since I don't have much to say, I'll let the picture do the rest; it can very well do it on its own. I don't think I'm going to go in-depth with the comics. This week, enjoy Wyvern14's debut with her comic adaptation of her fanfic inspired by Final Fantasy IV's characters and story. So what if Japan has The After and we don't? The rest of the world can have its very own follow-up story with Edge's Muse: Silence and Dust! This week, you get the first page of the story along with the cover illustration. Very good comic from a very skilled person! Thank you for all the artists who have sent fan art over the weeks and continue sending in your gems. Thank you for reading and looking, and please leave your comments in the forums!
